Ken is ready to follow Dorothy down the yellow brick road to re-create their adventures from the movie The Wizard of Oz. He has the painted eyebrows and nose of the Scarecrow, with the same wrinkled face and chin to show that his head is really supposed to be stuffed with straw. But this scarecrow does have brains, and he's holding his tiny rolled-up diploma in one hand to prove it. Barbie Ken wears a scarecrow costume--a green velour shirt and brown velour pants with appropriate patches and touches of straw created from frayed yellow ribbon. He's jointed at the neck, elbows, waist, and knees so he can sit down to rest with Dorothy and all his other pals from the movie, which are also available in this line of dolls.

I was prepared to hate this doll, for it to be either non-functional or to break within a day or so. Boy was I wrong! IMHO the design and functionality of this doll are wonderful! While it's true that there's a bit of a learning curve to working the doll, Barbie really wasn't too bad and the skirt/wings do seem to be fairly sturdy. I do agree with the other reviewer who said that some kids don't like plastic parts sticking out of the doll's back; I'm not sure my daughter is too crazy about them. But she does really like this doll overall!

As much as I love the Barbie line, the fairies always seem to suffer from design flaws. What you don't see in the pictures on amazon or on the box is that this fairy has all kinds of plastic pieces coming out her back. These pieces are so that the 'gimmick' of having the wings turn into a skirt in one motion of the arms would work. It makes the back of the doll kind of ugly and the skirt stick out weird in order to do the 'gimmick' movement.

I wish (and thought) this was more like the 3 musketeers barbies where the skirt does double duty (cape/skirt) but isn't attached to plastic pieces in the back. And like the Mariposa doll and other fairies, kids just don't like those plastic pieces in back. When you don't have wings permanently attached, they just fall off. All the time.

As others noted, getting this doll out of the package is a true pain. Getting the wings on the doll for the gimmick is even more annoying. Within 5 minutes, the wing gimmick trick no longer worked right and the crown fell off. I really wish they'd sew the crowns to the head.

So yeah, yet another failure. Instead of this doll, buy the new Mermaid dolls. Those have tails of soft vinyl that make the mermaid posable and much more fun to play. What girl wants to play with a toy that keeps breaking or has strange plastic pieces sticking out the back like a victim of strange experimentation?

I was afraid my daughter (age 9) wouldn't like the look of the joints on this type of Barbie. It isn't even an issue! She loves posing her and making her move in ways a typical Barbie can't. Overall, a great toy! :)

My 3 year old loves this Barbie, she loves that she can bend Barbie over and make her stand on her head with her arms streched out and her elbows bent like she is double jointed. Barbie sits on the edge of the end table. And while yes the package says over 100 poses, something a simple a moving her wrist in a different direction is considered a different pose. I don't know how educational Barbie is supposed to be. Barbie is fun for my daughter and is wearing her favorite color.

If you buy only one Barbie doll in your life, this is the one to get. Doll is beautiful, can bend elbows and knees in extreme, and can sit and also pose in one hundred ways. A really lifelike doll! This is the best most playable doll I seen Mattel do in a very long time. I wish Mattel would make their Marilyn Monroe series dolls with this posable body.---- This Fashionistas doll is truly durable and will not break. It is made to last for years. With her blonde hair and joyful face, this Barbie doll is a treasure. You don't need to buy one hundred Barbie dolls, when all you need is this one doll. My only complaint was/is that she has no ear holes to put earrings upon. I bought this at Amazon.com

Modern (1973-2009)

Hawaiian Fun Skipper from 1991 with the large doe eyes

In 1975 Growing Up Skipper was released. The gimmick of the doll, which led to much controversy in the newspapers, was that if Skipper's arm was rotated, the doll would become an inch taller and small breasts would appear on her rubber torso. In 1979 Skipper's entire appearance changed. She was advertised as "Super Teen Skipper." She had a new body mold which included small permanent breasts, and a different head mold that made her look slightly older. In 1985, Hot Stuff Skipper was released, which had another new head mold that included the addition of dimples and a longer face.

Skipper changed again in 1988 with the release of Teen Fun Skipper. Her new body mold was taller and more graceful. Her waist was more flexible and her breasts were slightly bigger. Her eyes were also enlarged, giving her a cartoon-like look. At this stage she appeared to be somewhere between 13 to 15 years old. Later, Skipper had a new head mold with smaller eyes in a Pizza Party line, but with the same body mold. Many collectors believe that the 'Pizza Party' head mold was the most popular, if not the prettiest, version of Skipper. Dolls with the 'Pizza Party' Skipper head mold and the 1960s head mold are the most sought after Skipper dolls by collectors.

Finally, in 1997, Teen Skipper was introduced. She again had a new body mold and was now almost as tall as her sister Barbie. This was mostly because of her legs, which were now long and lanky. Most notable of all, however, was Skipper's new face mold. She no longer looked like a child, but more like a girl on the brink of becoming a woman, appearing to be about 16 years of age.

In 1994, the first vintage reproduction Skipper was produced specifically for collectors to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Skipper's introduction. Instead of the usual vinyl, the dolls were made of porcelain. She wore a blue reproduction dress from 1965, known then as "Happy Birthday." In 2007, Mattel released their second vintage reproduction Skipper doll, this time sold in a gift set along with a reproduction of a vintage swirl ponytail Barbie doll.
